This information enables us to build new services, and improve existing ones. Many other companies have been collecting data just like this for as long as, if not longer, than Google.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Photos<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">: so that we can build Street View, our 360 degree street level maps. Photos like these are also being taken by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tele_Atlas\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">TeleAtlas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/article2\/0,2817,2356816,00.asp\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">NavTeq for Bing maps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. In addition, we use this imagery to improve the quality of our maps, for example by using shop, street and traffic signs to refine our local business listings and travel directions;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">WiFi network information<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">: which we use to improve location-based services like search and maps. Organizations like the German <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/idw-online.de\/pages\/de\/news355270\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Fraunhofer Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.skyhookwireless.com\/howitworks\/\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Skyhook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> already collect this information globally; <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and    3-D building imagery<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">: we collect 3D geometry data with low power lasers (similar to those used in retail scanners) which help us improve our maps. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/corporate.navteq.com\/webapps\/NewsUserServlet?action=NewsDetail&amp;newsId=825&amp;lang=en&amp;englishonly=false\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">NavTeq<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> also collects this information in partnership with Bing.
